I think 30 minutes is sufficient for daddy/mommy & me, announcements, minis, family shots, and milestones.
I think 1 hour is sufficient for maternity, large families, birthdays, baby/bridal showers, engagements, and bridal portraits.
If you are undecided, you should consider if you want bridal portraits or engagement pictures. You should also decide how much you want photographed at your wedding as time is very limiting.
